Calming By Decluttering

You must have heard the saying ‘a cluttered desk is a sign of a cluttered mind’. Clutter comes with a lot of baggage, both literally and figuratively, often leading to anxiety and anger. To calm your mind, decluttering is a great activity to indulge in.

Decluttering means clearing the space by removing unnecessary items to make it pleasant and more useful. A tidy space in your room creates good energy and helps calm your mind. Decluttering can thus, reduce stress, anxiety, clouding of thoughts as well as forgetfulness.

How should I do it?

  • Initially, you may start by cleaning and re-organizing one small space at a time like one of your drawers or a small cupboard.
  • Gradually move on to cleaning bigger areas like your closet space, your room and so on.
  • Get rid of all the unwanted things such as things that you haven’t used in the last 8-10 months, old and worn out clothes, shoes, old files etc. giving you more space for the things you actually need.
  • By decluttering one thing a day for a week, you will notice a change in the environment around you as well as within you!
  • You may also practice de-cluttering your whole room at once, in case you have adequate time. The key is to ensure that while de-cluttering your physical space, you are aware of every little step you are taking from dusting, to discarding to reorganizing.

“Clutter is not just the stuff on your floor – it’s anything that stands between you and the life you want to be living.” – Peter Walsh
